You have the PDF.

But the original Adobe InDesign file is gone.

If the required fonts are available on your computer or through Adobe Fonts, reconstruction may be much easier.

If they’re unavailable, InDesign may need to substitute fonts.

Even a metrically similar replacement can cause substantial layout changes.


Activate Missing Adobe Fonts

If the original publication used fonts available through Adobe Fonts, Creative Cloud may be able to activate them.

What Happens to Paragraph Styles?

PDFs may contain raster images, vector graphics, or combinations of both.

You May Not Recover the Original Image

Suppose the original InDesign document linked to a 6000 × 4000 pixel TIFF photograph.

The visual footer may simply appear on every PDF page.

That means reusable source-document logic may need to be reconstructed.

Look for repeated elements such as:

  • page numbers
  • running headers
  • logos
  • footer information
  • background graphics

If these elements occur throughout the publication, rebuild them on parent pages rather than maintaining dozens of independent copies.


This Is the Difference Between Recovery and Reconstruction

PDF conversion should be viewed as document recovery, not perfect source restoration.

The software can recover a large amount of useful content.

But if you’re turning the converted document into a reusable professional template, you’ll probably want to reconstruct some of the original architecture.

That includes:

  • styles
  • parents
  • layers
  • text threading
  • reusable objects
  • image links

This cleanup is still usually much faster than recreating everything from scratch.


Compare Against the Original PDF

Keep the source PDF open while reviewing the converted InDesign document.

Compare pages side by side.

Check:

  • page dimensions
  • margins
  • text wrapping
  • line endings
  • image positions
  • colors
  • borders
  • page numbers
  • tables
  • graphics

A visual comparison can quickly reveal reconstruction problems.


Check for Overset Text

Font substitution and frame reconstruction can create overset text.

Use InDesign’s Preflight tools to identify these problems.

Don’t assume a page is correct just because it looks approximately like the PDF.
